I had the distinct pleasure and honor to be featured last week as a design darling on The Southern Coterie, a social media network of the south, an online community where southerners and all those who love the south can connect, congregate and converse. I had a blast answering all of co-founder Cheri Leavy's questions and am looking forward the the Southern Coterie Summit on Jekyl Island, GA the first weekend in May. Tons of great bloggers and designers are already slated for the panels and I can't wait.
Happy Monday!

Spring has sprung peeps and I am guest editing again over at CLOTH & KIND for my Anatomy of Flora: Spring I column. This go round I am spilling on the joys of early Spring bloomers: the tulip magnolia, loropetalum chinense, and the always lovely flowering dogwood. Please join me and let me know your thoughts! Thanks for stopping by--now head over to CLOTH & KIND!

But nature is a stranger yet / The ones that cite her most / Have never passed her haunted house / Nor simplified her ghost / To pity those who know her not / Is helped by the regret / That those who know her, know her less / The nearer her they get {Emily Dickinson}
I first admired April Skelton as an aerial artist. She is a specimen of pure beauty and power as she dances through the air on silk fabrics at Canopy Studio in Athens, Georgia. As much as I envied her strength and poise as an aerialist, I have come to know her otherwise, and it has only deepened my admiration and connection to her. Her talent extends to her appreciation for the natural world, which she offers via instagram (find her @teenslueth) in A Sunday Collection. This series is really a pocketful of soulfulness in how she brings part and parcel together to form a poetry of gathered items from her walks through the woods. I have grown to crave her eye, her natural vignettes, her thoughtfulness, and the words she puts to images. My bet is you will too. I am so excited that April will join as a guest editor for the Gathered column here on Mondays with A Sunday Collection.
A bit about April: April Skelton credits her Mom, an artist and gardener, with teaching her about plants, and more importantly, teaching her how to look closely and pay attention. She finds constant amazement in discovering the tiny worlds that exist at our feet every day. April started A Sunday Collection as a way to bring her attention to beauty in the natural world during solitary hours each week. Each collection she finds feels like a gift. In her former life, April was a magazine editor, writer and stylist; these days, she is student of physical therapy and a teacher of aerial dance in Athens, Georgia.

Please join me over at Cloth & Kind today for my third guest post in Anatomy of Flora: Winter III where I am featuring the beauty of the old fashioned pearl bush. It is a glimspe at serendipity and how experiences, even the really hard ones, inform the beauty of new growth.

Please join me over at Cloth & Kind today for my second guest post Anatomy of Flora : Winter II on a few Valentine's Day picks from the garden of love. It is a raw and revealing look at my heart indeed but my guess is that lots of folks will relate to trudging this happy road of love. Best of days to you and the ones you hold near and dear.

A New Chapter: CLOTH & KIND
April 23, 2013

It all started with a chaise lounge: rode hard and hung to dry, the vintage rattan covered with a poorly applied and seriously chipped and peeling red lacquer. But God it had incredible potential. More importantly though, that chaise marked the beginning of a serendipitous cascade of events, the whole of which has changed my life. I purchased the chaise for twenty dollars without a second thought from a yard sale of my dear friend Rinne Allen. Her husband chuckled and wished me luck as he loaded it into my car saying it had sat untouched for countless years in their basement, all hopes dashed for refinishing it. A rock skipped across the water and set in motion the first rings of a beautiful ripple effect.
As it turned out, it sat untouched for ten more years in my warehouse. I even sold it four years ago to a friend, who stored it for another year, and then I begged her to let me buy it back. After a massive renovation and modest new addition to our current home, I had the perfect room for the chaise, a sun flooded barrel vaulted beauty with huge casement windows. I pinned a few images of the still unfinished chaise on Pinterest, and the ripple spun out a bit wider. Chairloom co-owner Molly Andrews, who can spot a diamond in the rough like no other, repinned the image of the chaise on her inspiration board, and the ripple spun out wider still. Krista Nye Schwartz of CLOTH & KIND saw Molly’s pin, and commented that it was exactly what she was looking for and wanted to buy it. I commented to Krista that it belonged to me and that I would send an image once the chaise was refinished. Sporting a new paint job in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe and covered in Hable Construction’s Aventurine Ropes, Krista featured the refinished chaise and my living room on her Inspired column, and from that point forward our friendship was sealed.
At the risk of waxing philosophical, I do not believe in random encounters. I believe that as I consciously create my life with intention, I draw into it the people and experiences that support the life I want and envision for myself. That chaise lounge, as weird as it sounds, was like a honing device that led me to Krista--the ripple effect widening out until our lives became intertwined. Six degrees of separation. Always.
Our shared love of textiles, curated interior design and our workhorse sensibility made our friendship and blog collaborations easy ones and it became obvious in short order that we were a freakin’ dream team. We literally found our creative other half and made haste to craft a multifaceted design partnership under the CLOTH & KIND brand. Moving forward on the blog, you can expect to see a coalescence of our shared vision for highly curated and original content and distinct voice for storytelling. Adding to the kitty, we have merged of our interior design firms and will work collaboratively on all future projects. Now, our clients will reap the benefits of our combined ripple of creative talent for creating spaces with history and heart, story and substance.
